Choosing the Right Art Size – Bigger, Smaller, or a Bit of Both?
Too small and it gets lost. Too big and it overpowers. But don’t stress – here’s how to pick the perfect size (or break the rules entirely).
Sizing Guidelines (That You Can Totally Ignore)
1. Wall Space Matters
- Big wall? Go for oversized statement pieces or create a gallery wall.
- Small wall? A single, strong piece or a series of smaller prints can work.
2. Eye-Level is the Sweet Spot
A general rule: Center your art around 145-150cm from the floor. But if you have high ceilings or lower furniture, adjust accordingly. And if you’re layering, let instinct guide you.
3. Over Furniture – The Right Proportions
- Above a sofa/bed: Your artwork should be about two-thirds the width of the furniture below it.
- Above a console: Leave about 10-20cm of space between the furniture and the frame.
4. Create Impact with Size Variation
Not everything needs to be perfectly balanced. Try combining a large statement piece with a smaller, unexpected element nearby. It keeps things interesting.
Break the Rules (Because Why Not?)
Some of the best art arrangements happen when you ditch the measuring tape and just go with what feels right. Trust your gut – it’s your space, your vibe.
